Sinking Ships

“Every satisfied desire arouses the desire for more‚”

-Sylvie Fleury

We live in a culture of excess and consumption where over indulgence is not only tolerated, but also envied. Our consumer culture has run so rampant that one individual's consumption could fulfill the needs of hundreds.

Earlier in the work of Christian Boltanski to see a room full of clothes, or mounds and piles of boxes or tins was a reference to the lives of the masses that lost their lives to the Holocaust, each piece a stand in for a life.

This piece is but one life. The neatly manicured rows of Sinking Ships are constructed using only clothing owned by my mother. The vast rows marking years of satisfied desires.
